What exactly is a pedicure?

So you’ve heard of this pedicure thing and you’re not sure what it really is. If you’re like me, you might think that a pedicure is just painting your toenails! Well, that may or may not be part of the pedicure package you choose, but it’s not a pedicure itself. In fact, unless you choose that option, it may not be a part of your pedicure at all. A pedicure should be part of your overall foot care regimen. In fact, it’s probably the most important part of your foot care program.

A typical pedicure, depending on the shape of your feet, consists of a number of things. The first thing you can expect from your pedicure is for your feet to be soaked in a cleansing and softening solution. This is done for a couple of reasons. One, it feels good and gives you that spa feeling. Two, clean your feet; You wouldn’t want to work with dirty, stinky feet and neither would your pedicurist. Three, it softens the skin and nails in preparation for the rest of the pedicure process.

Typically, after soaking and cleaning the feet, a professional pedicurist will begin grooming by removing the existing polish from the toenails. Your toenails will be trimmed if necessary. They will be filed to remove any sharp edges and shaped into an attractive curve. If the upper part of the nails needs it, it will be buffed to give them a natural shine. Your cuticles will be trimmed if necessary and oiled. The nails will then be cleaned of any debris residing under them. This will be the extent of your toenail maintenance, unless you have opted for buffing, wrapping, or other enhancements.

If this is your first time, you will probably have a lot of skin on the bottom of your feet that will need to be removed. This is done using a pumice stone or scrubbing lotion/solution. This is often referred to as “polishing.” Depending on how much skin you have accumulated on the bottom of your feet will determine how long this process will take. Often after foot cleaning, your pedicurist will follow with a lotion and massage of the foot, ankle and calf area. Do not expect a full massage, just a short relaxing massage on the lower leg and foot area. This will get your blood flow moving and will revitalize you.

Your pedicure can also be finished with some nail oil or, if you wear open-toed shoes, a nail polish or nail art. Polish and nail art will incur an additional charge and may even include jewelry. Having attractive feet is essential for summer or if you live in a hot climate. Remember, if you plan to go to the beach you should refresh your nails afterwards since the sand will act as sandpaper on your feet and nails.
