Frankenmuth, a Bavarian-themed town, is unlike any other Michigan town. It feels like I’ve stepped back in time to when things were simpler, maybe a little more peaceful. It is a place where families can enjoy quality time together while forgetting about the outside world. I enjoy visiting Frankenmuth all year round, not just in summer.
Within about a square mile, this picturesque town offers visitors a taste of Bavaria as they walk in and out of the shops, enjoying chocolates, wine tasting, cheese tasting, and of course, dining on a delicious famous chicken for dinner.
Speaking of chicken, it’s impossible to talk about Frankenmuth without mentioning their world-famous chicken! Zehnder’s and Bavarian Inn are owned by brothers William Zehnder and Edwin Zehnder. The restaurants are located across the street and both offer all-you-can-eat chicken dinners with all the trimmings in a beautiful Bavarian-themed setting. In keeping with the theme, cheerful servers dressed in Bavarian-style uniforms deliver your hearty meals.
The Bavarian Belle Riverboat is another Frankenmuth favorite. For just a few dollars (cash only), you can sit back and relax as the riverboat captain guides the beautiful covered boat on the Cass River. As a bonus, the Bavarian Belle is a family owned and operated business. As such, the father and son operation strives to provide you with the best possible experience on every river trip. Oh, and they make delicious popcorn for every river trip!
As you enjoy the views, the riverboat captain will point out wildlife along the shore, tell witty jokes, and share informative history about the area. There’s never a dull moment when you point out the homes of prominent Frankenmuth residents and talk about the star of the West Milling Company as you watch their operation near the river.
Strolling down Main Street is a treat for the eyes and for the stomach. Frankenmuth Cheese Haus draws visitors young and old for a photo opportunity alongside a huge wedge of bright yellow cheese with a mouse poking its head out of the top. Handmade candy, sausage and chocolate shops with large open windows attract curious visitors. Don’t miss the hidden castle shops located on the lower level of the Bavarian Inn restaurant.
South of the Bavarian Inn restaurant, to the east, is the nostalgic Covered Bridge. Both vehicles and pedestrians can cross this bridge with secure walled walkways on both sides of the bridge. Be sure to walk on both sides of the bridge for panoramic views of Heritage Park and the beautiful downtown area. It is especially exciting to cross the bridge as the Bavarian Belle glides underneath.
Lastly, River Place stores located at the south end of Main Street offer culinary delights like SugarHigh Bakery, which won Cup Cake Wars in season 7, The Popcorn Wagon for 40 flavors of delicious popcorn, and La Crepe du Jour for crepes. handmade sweet and savory. . River Place stores contain loads of family businesses that satisfy our taste buds, our beloved pets and our children. Clothing stores, wineries, a distillery, and leather goods are sure to delight shoppers of all ages. Not to mention a small river that winds its way through the commercial area.
