[Chinese Restaurant Review] Spicy and tasty (Flushing, NY)

[Chinese Restaurant Review] Spicy and tasty (Flushing, NY)

We are sure to start the year on fire! Fireworks !! Flares !!! And that was just in our stomachs. I swear I got a new hole in my lower intestine. Spicy! And yet very, very tasty.

We were treated to a plethora of spicy dishes that were served with solemn grace and humility that left us speechless (perhaps asking for water … but of course asking for more! Wait until you see all the dishes we tried!)

This was a restaurant we would never have stumbled upon, even if we were just looking for a pot to pee on and all other stores were closed. This restaurant was located in the heart of Flushing among a thousand other Chinese restaurants. And if it weren’t for our honorary brother, and now honorary Jew, Mee James Zeeman, who recommended this restaurant to Mee, we would never have considered dining here:

Spicy and tasty

39-07 Prince Street, 1H

Flushing, NY 11354

We got there early this Wednesday night and there was not much business at the time. Some other tables got busy during the night, although the place was not crowded by any means. Temperatures were in the single digits and wind chills were below zero. But, people surely lost the pot on this one … if they wanted to warm up, here were the dishes to do just that!

The menu was filled with such unfamiliar dishes that we relied heavily on the recommendations of our servers to treat us to authentic Chinese food. Fair warning: some of the staff didn’t speak English (in fact, when you call, they greet you in Chinese). But this is the type of Chinese restaurant we are looking for.

Our motto for this meal was “Don’t think. Just eat!” And we ate we did. And drink too! Although there was no white wine, they sold beer, sake, and red wine by the bottle.

We started with five appetizers (we were hoping to try their fried pork ribs, but they only serve them on weekends):

  • Seaweed with Fresh GarlicIt very well offsets the hot spices in all the other dishes we had, along with:
  • Cucumber Salad in Sesame Oil
  • Bo-bo chicken – It almost made me a boo boo in my esophagus. OMG, that was a spicy chicken dish. However, quite tasty! Hmm … maybe that’s where the name of the restaurant comes from.
  • Peeled pork with garlic sauce – DELICIOUS! Almost like undercooked bacon. Tasty without salmonella

Mini Mee wasn’t brave enough to try any of their signature dishes instead opting for Steamed dumplings. They weren’t even on the menu. That boy knows how to get what he wants! Truly a meeting in the making! And he liked it so much that he asked for a second order!

We ordered four starters to complete our dinner:

  • Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce – Out of this world!
  • Spicy Double Cooked Pork with Black Bean Sauce – A little drier than the sliced pork in our appetizer, but had a more distinctive smoky flavor and went down just as smoothly. The dish was served with leeks, perhaps the best vegetable of the many accompanying vegetables.
  • Sliced beef in fresh hot pepper Like butter. My favorite dish!
  • Dan-Dan noodles with minced pork – It was a nice surprise. It’s good that our server served this dish. I don’t think we would have known that we had mixed it all up before distributing it. I loved the taste of these noodles and it had a hidden twist on the end. We ordered two of these dishes which were so good!

If you have a stomach for spicy Sichuan food, we highly recommend Spicy & Tasty!

Sliced oranges were served as a dessert which refreshed our palate. Fortune cookies were not served at this authentic Chinese restaurant.

The bill was extremely reasonable. Our stomachs were filled with joy and happiness. Do not think; Just go eat there!

Humbly presented for your consumption,
