Well, the Cutler/Denver drama is over and we can look forward to the NFL draft at the end of the month. My quick recap of the trade: My initial thought is that Denver pulled a steal in this trade. Denver coach Josh McDaniels and his former QB Jay Cutler acted like two high school girls fighting over the same guy. Break it ladies! We’ll never know who was right, or less so who was wrong, but they’re both lucky that “Director Bowlen, aka the CEO/President of the Broncos, took matters into his own hands and fixed things. McDaniels, who seemed Being 16, he tried to make a deal to reiterate that this is HIS team like a lot of first-year coaches do, but he couldn’t make the trade for Matt Cassel.
Cutler acted like a baby from the start, putting his foot down and refusing to answer any of McDaniels’ texts (I love this decade of “instant access” with cell phones and “Twitter”). He also put her house up for sale and her parents too. However, Cutler kept his prime location, a row house in downtown Denver, so he could still sell it to any lady who might be sweet on him, or still keep in touch with all the dear friends he made in the area. during the last 4 years. . Give it a year and that place will be sold too. So nothing gets resolved for over 3 weeks until Bowlen steps in to end the drama and says he’ll try to change the disgruntled QB and whammo: it’s done in a few days. Well done Pat! It was interesting to hear Cutler say, “I didn’t expect (the trade) so soon.”
What the hell did you expect from a drama like Brett Favre’s that would go on for several months? Marginal note; Cutler and Favre have the same agent, Bus Cook, so that shouldn’t surprise you. At the post-trade news conference, McDaniels tried to emulate his former New England boss Bill Belichik by giving the team a sweatshirt and referring to his former quarterback as “the player” rather than by name to deflect attention. Cutler and move it back. to the Broncos. Nice move Josh, but we all know you have a crush on Belichick, so don’t try so hard to be him next time.
Ok, so the trade itself looks great for Denver. They get 2 first-round picks that they could use to group up and move up, but should use to fix their stinking Swiss cheese defense. They also get a third round pick and Kyle Orton. Orton wasn’t just a throw-in, and people forget that he has a winning record as the starting QB, 21-12, and is even better in his starts at home, 15-2. Denver fans will appreciate that, and Orton will appreciate throwing to competent WRs in Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal. Not to mention, Denver routinely spawns over 1,000 runners who find themselves under rocks, in the sixth round or at the bottom of their bench. Orton has to be a happy camper assuming he beats Chris Simms for the starting job, but that’s an article for later. Cutler is going to a team that he has been and always will be focused on defense. The glory days of a flashy quarterback in Chicago were more than 20 years ago and ended with Jim McMahon and his team doing the “Super Bowl Shuffle.” He wins the big one, cuts a video and you’re the Jay man. That is all; It’s pretty simple, right? Nope!
Cutler inherits an offense that isn’t in the top 5, top 10 or even top 20. They suck! Who is he going to shoot? His top 2 weapons are 2nd year stud RB Matt Forte, who is great at catching the ball, and probably TE Greg Olson, who needs to step up and eventually produce. My prediction is that those 2 combine for 150+ catches, write it down and save it for later. After those 2 players, you have KR/WR Devin Hester if he can stay healthy. Good luck with that. The only healthy thing about Hester is his wallet after his resistance last season. My suggestion to Bear is to get a veteran WR like Torry Holt or Marvin Harrison to help Cutler out and really give him a chance, otherwise Lovie and the team are going out of town after this season. Time will tell who gets the best deal until then it’s wait and see.
Other NFL Notes: It was great to see TO show up and engage with his new teammates in Buffalo. Welcome to the sound team. Only TO and only in Buffalo can he make a big splash by signing a 1 year contract and then telling the team the following week that he is going to work out from home and they ACCEPT him! That shows how desperate they both are. I found Owens’ comment quite amusing: “I’ll work out with them if I’m in the area.” Um, yeah, because Buffalo is so close to anywhere you’ll be traveling. It’s practically next to Miami and Los Angeles, right? TO is there because he needs the Bills to try to showcase themselves in one more big deal. Let’s hope Western, New York makes popcorn. I hope you understand my rants, I may be right, I may be wrong, but I will always try to make you think about things and laugh while doing it.
