What is the function of the intake manifold in an engine?

In any engine, the intake system is of utmost importance, as it deals with the performance of the engine, including power and torque. It is important that the combustion chambers produce the same pressure to ensure the proper functioning of the engine cylinder. You can achieve this purpose by sending the same level of charge to the cylinders. Apart from this, the physical properties, the quality and the air-fuel charge ratio must be the same. Function

The function of the carburetor is to feed the air-fuel mixture to the combustion chamber. The intake manifold sends an equal amount of fuel-air mixture to each cylinder. Valve timing must be correct at the same time.

Each piston must compress the load according to the compression ratio. If the ignition timing is correct, it will ensure that the spark occurs on time. In reality, since the intake manifold has different temperatures, flow rates, contours, angles, and step sizes, the load may not be the same for all cylinders. You may experience the difference in engine performance at low speeds.

Design

Typically, the intake manifold included an aluminum or cast iron tube. Toda manifolds can be chrome-plated or powder-coated. Also, the carburetor is mounted in the center of the intake manifold. It is designed so that the fuel-air mixture can enter the engine’s cylinders without any problem. The carburetor is fixed on the intake manifold, which is fixed on the block according to the design.

Today’s intake manifolds help vaporize gasoline in the air-fuel mixture. In addition, the engine’s cooling system and the outgoing exhaust gases are responsible for providing heat. Apart from this, the thermostat valves control the amount of heat.

System design

Simple tube:

The single-pass intake manifold features a single tube that makes a connection between the engine cylinders and the carburetor. But a double flange manifold features a separate pair of tubes for the cylinders. So if you have a four cylinder engine, there will be four passages that merge into a single tube that goes to the carburetor.

Duel tube:

Dual intake manifolds typically have two tubes and two carburettors, with each tube feeding 50% of what the engine needs. The idea is to prevent the stroke from overlapping on the collector. Therefore, it can help improve the uniformity of the fuel-air mixture distribution.

Playground:

Also, some modern vehicle engines come in a four-tube design. If there is an intake manifold with a four-pipe design, the first and second outlets go to the cylinders in a certain order, which is 2, 3, 5, and 8. On the other hand, the other pipes go to the cylinders in an order of 1, 4, 6 and 7.
