Get a rescue dog

Getting a rescue dog has many benefits. The biggest benefit is that you are giving the dog a second chance at life. Often times, a rescue dog will have little chance of survival if it is in a kennel. Because the pounds are so overwhelmed with the animals, they have to make the sad decision to euthanize some of the dogs and cats in their care. This is a heartbreaking decision, but one that can be minimized when people choose to get a rescue dog instead of buying one from a pet store. Pet store dogs generally come from deplorable circumstances, such as puppy farms, where parent dogs are kept in horrible conditions and treated as objects rather than lives.

Rescue dogs are of all breeds and ages. If you are looking for a purebred dog but never thought you could get one for a pound, think again! Many purebred dogs like German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, and all other types are in pounds. It is believed that up to 30% of pound dogs are in fact purebred. Yes, it’s sad that they ended up there, but you can give them a new lease of life. Other places to find rescue dogs are in the classifieds in the “free to a good home” section. Here you will also find all kinds of dogs. The only difficult part is deciding which rescue dog to adopt.

Getting a rescue dog generally means getting a dog other than a puppy. This has its benefits, as the dog’s personality and behavior are well established. Naturally, their behavior will be altered and nurtured by you. Some rescue dogs have had a very difficult life and will need a little more love and care from their new owners.

Dogs end up in extreme pounds or situations for many reasons ranging from physical abuse, until the owner passes away or is ill, or simply from being abandoned. Whatever the sad story of your rescue dog, giving him a warm, safe and loving home will mean that he will leave the past behind.

Getting a rescue dog gives you a lot of satisfaction, knowing that you are giving new life to an animal that may have been destined for tragedy. Rescue dogs make fantastic pets, as they may already be trained and socialized with humans, so there is no need to start from scratch. You’ll also get a dewormed, microchipped and spayed or neutered dog, saving you a lot of vet costs.

As with all dogs, training from day one is extremely important. You must establish yourself as the leader of the pack. Dogs have a strong desire for a calm and assertive pack leader. Getting your dog to walk properly is your first obligation, the second is to become the leader of the pack. These two formative aspects go hand in hand.
